Definition of infrared filter:
Infrared filter is an optical grade material that absorbs or reflects visible light and transmits infrared light.

Definition of infrared cut-off filter:
Infrared cut-off filter is an optical material that transmits visible light but not infrared light.

From the definitions of the two, we can see that infrared filters and infrared cut-off filters are two types of filters with completely opposite optical properties. Nowadays, many people also refer to infrared cut-off filters as infrared filters, which is at least loosely defined.

Classification of infrared filters:
From the perspective of substrate materials, infrared filters can be quickly divided into colored glass infrared filters, optical glass coated infrared filters, and acrylic plastic infrared filters. Not only that, if the infrared band reaches mid to far infrared, there are also materials such as quartz glass.

According to the optical performance of infrared filters, they can be divided into bandpass infrared filters and long wavelength infrared filters.

The long wave pass type is further divided into the following types:
1. Made of colored glass, usually black. It absorbs visible light and allows infrared light to pass through, making it suitable for infrared imaging.
The second type, also known as optical cold mirror, is made by vacuum coating on optical glass. It reflects visible light and allows infrared light to pass through, giving it a silver appearance and resembling a mirror.
3. Infrared plastic filter made of special plastic, also presenting a black appearance

Another type is bandpass infrared filter, which is made of optical glass coated with vacuum coating. For near-infrared bandpass filters, coating is done on white glass. The corresponding light sources for near-infrared bandpass filters are mainly infrared IR LEDs and infrared lasers, so the main wavelengths are 808nm, 850nm, 905nm, 940nm, 1064nm, and the less commonly used 780nm. The corresponding models are NBF-808, BPF-850, and BPF-940.

Classification of infrared cut-off filters:
Like infrared filters, infrared cut-off filters are also divided into reflective infrared cut-off filters and absorptive infrared cut-off filters. Some people also call this type of filter a heat absorbing filter.

The main function of infrared cut-off filter is to eliminate the influence of infrared light on imaging, and it is applied in various digital imaging fields. By adding an infrared cut-off filter to the imaging system to block the infrared light that interferes with the imaging quality, the resulting image can be made more in line with the best perception of the human eye. It is the core component of digital cameras, camera phones, and other digital camera lens systems.
