The Application of Filters in Photography

Filter is an essential optical component in photography, which can change the spectral intensity distribution or polarization state of incident light according to requirements. In terms of optical propagation direction behavior, there are mainly reflection, transmission, scattering, polarization, and density attenuation.

Transmission and reflection occur simultaneously on both surfaces of the filter. From an energy perspective, reflectivity, transmittance, and absorptivity are often used to represent the distribution of energy, and they have different distributions according to different needs. The radiation absorbed by the filter material is usually released in the form of heat, fluorescence, or photochemical reactions within the filter material.

Colored glass filters are thinner than glass adhesive films because they are made of colored glass. It also has a strong ability to transmit and absorb colors. It is not easily affected by moisture and does not fade easily. But its color grade is not as good as colored adhesive film.

Black and white photography specific filters can be distinguished by color depth, which affects the absorption and transmission ability of color light. Generally, the darker the color, the fewer the quantity.

Black and white photography filters can be classified by color:
1. A yellow filter can transmit colors such as yellow, orange, red, and green, and absorb two colors, blue and purple. The channel of the spectrum is about 500 nm, and the yellow part of 600 nm passes through 500 nm and above. Yellow filters can be classified into dark yellow, medium yellow, and light yellow based on their color depth.

2. An orange filter can absorb blue, purple, and a small amount of green light, passing through colors such as yellow, orange, and red. The spectral transmission range is 560-700nm.

3. The red orange filter can absorb blue, purple, and a considerable amount of green through colors such as yellow, orange, and red. The spectral transmission position is 590-700nm.

4. A red filter can pass through the three primary colors of red, orange, and yellow, up to the maximum amount of red, and absorb green, green, blue, and purple. The spectral transmission area is approximately 600-700nm.

5. Green filter, through the dichroism of yellow and green, green can absorb the maximum amount of purple, blue, and red colors, and can also absorb the maximum amount of orange. The position of spectral transmission is approximately 500-600 nanometers.

6. The blue filter can pass through three colors: blue, blue, and purple. Blue can absorb a large amount of yellow, orange, red, and purple colors. The spectral transmission area is approximately 380-500nm.
