Optical lens image differences

In the optical lens of an optical component, every point on the object plane within the effective field of view during observation forms a clear image point on the image plane of the eye. We refer to the difference between the ideal image and the actual image as image difference, abbreviated as aberration.

Image differences can be divided into two categories: monochrome image differences and color differences.

Monochromatic aberration is divided into:
Spherical aberration: When a paraxial ray passes through a spherical mirror, the ray passing through the center of the lens and the ray passing through the edge of the lens cannot intersect at one point. This type of aberration is called spherical aberration.

Huijian: A monochromatic conical beam emitted from an external point outside the main axis to an optical system. After being refracted by an optical system, if a clear point cannot be formed on an ideal plane, but a comet spot with a bright tail is formed, then this aberration is called aberration.

Astigmatism: Due to the fact that the point of the luminous object is not on the optical axis of the lens, the beam it emits has a large inclination angle with the optical axis. After being refracted by a lens, the light beam cannot be focused on a single point. This type of aberration is called astigmatism.

Image bending: A planar object cannot be truly imaged as a plane, but rather as a surface, i.e. image bending. This will blur the peripheral image of the image, known as the curved image.

Distortion: The bending of a straight line on an object after imaging with a lens. This kind of distortion is called distortion. Color difference is a serious defect in lens imaging. When using multi-color light as the light source, monochromatic light will not produce color difference. White light is composed of red and orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The wavelengths of various types of light are different, and the refractive index of each type of light passing through a lens is also different. In this way, a point in the grid can be; Form a color spot.

Position chromatic aberration: Light parallel to the optical axis converges at different image points before and after passing through a lens group. Short wave has a short focal length, while long wave has a long focal length.

Magnifying color difference: After the mixed light emitted by the off-axis spot passes through the lens group, the mixed light converges at different heights, causing the image edges to decompose into rainbows, displaying different magnifications of the presentation of different colored light.

Others:
Dizziness: The phenomenon where the outer part of the optical axis inside the pupil obstructs light.

Stray light: refers to the interference light in imaging.

The impact on image quality
The spherical aberration softens the center of the image and prevents the clearest point from appearing.

The radial and tangential focal points around the scattered light separation image cannot be focused simultaneously.

Distortion causes the image to become distorted, with surrounding straight lines turning into curves.

The positional color difference causes the central light spot in the image to become a color ring.
The chromatic aberration of magnification results in colored edges on the contour of the image scene.

Halo causes high brightness at the center and edges of the image.

Stray light reduces the contrast and saturation of the image, and backlighting can easily produce fog and ghosting.

Elimination method
Reduce spherical error: When using non spherical lenses, use composite lenses, optimize lens materials, and optimize lens group structure.

Methods to reduce coma: try to use composite lenses, optimize the structure and materials of the lens group;

Reduce astigmatism: Use composite lenses, preferably lens materials and lens group structures;

Reduce distortion: Use non spherical lenses, preferably with a lens structure and lens material;

Reduce magnification chromatic aberration: It is best to use lens materials and composite lenses;

Reduce vignetting: Optimize lens assembly structure;

Reduce stray light: use a coating extinction coating to optimize the lens group structure.
